Many people think of the future as a time when robots will take over all manual labor and make people’s lives easier. There are many interesting things awaiting us in the future. For instance, everyone may be "driving" an electric car with a complete and safe autopilot made possible by Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Robots powered by AI can help out in hospitals. Patients who need immediate medical attention do not have to wait long hours for help. Instead, robots can serve them in place of physician's assistants. Robots could even be controlled remotely by a skilled doctor who may not even be in the same country as the patient. That way, patients can be tended to quickly.
Training a human doctor to be the best they can be could take ten years or more. However, mass-produced robots can be coded to become "doctors" in a matter of days. Robots built with smart AI may even start performing better than skilled doctors!
AI can be taken to a whole other level, benefitting people who work very tiring shifts. They can enjoy their favorite movies with a bowl of popcorn while a robot does the hard work for them. Robots can do the work people do not want to do. For example, taking out the trash or construction work in harsh climates. All we need to do is to charge up the robot’s batteries, and sore backs and muscle aches will not be an inconvenience any more!
There is one worry. That is not having your paycheck from your job. If robots take over, then many people’s jobs will also be taken over by robots, and it wouldn’t even be their choice. More businesses will follow, and the hassle of finding a new job can become frustrating.
When too many robots have taken over households, things can get overly chaotic and some robots can end up doing things that we may not want. One stroke of bad luck – or a bug in the robot’s software – can turn your kitchen into a disaster zone, with smoke rushing through your nose and endless coughing spasms overwhelming you. This is also crucial when robots can put people’s lives at risk. A disastrous situation can arise if an autopilot fails to yield or halt for a pedestrian.
If there aren’t any laws on what robots can and cannot do, then robots may not do what we want them to do. Advances in law have lagged behind technological advances in the past. For example, issues like child labor and internet theft became a big problem because the law did not keep up with advances in internet technology. We should make sure that this mistake is not repeated in the case of robotics. Otherwise, a golden future can become a dystopian nightmare!
